Designed by Architecture Republic, ‘Formwork’ is a compact building (25sqm) in the back garden of a terraced house in Drumcondra. It is a poured in-situ concrete structure and quite different from the traditional idea of an artist’s studio. We attempted to make it fit for purpose. Eventually I realized its purpose would never be fixed. An artist’s studio needs to accommodate change; in one way or another change is its purpose. An emphatic object in itself the building is both a challenging and stimulating environment. As much a place made as a place for making, it forms a dialogue with activities that go on there.
